Hydro miner will not start, and you are looking at control board repair? On a liquid-cooled Antminer the C59 and C89 are replaced rather than repaired — but only after we prove the board is the fault. Then a new board goes in and the miner runs under load.

The control board on a Hydro machine is the one part that gets blamed for faults it did not cause. A liquid-cooled Antminer has a second way to refuse to run that an air-cooled one does not have, and from the front panel the two look similar enough that boards get swapped for nothing. So the first question here is not which board you need. It is whether the board is the problem at all.

Is it the board, or is it the water?

The fault light answers this before anyone opens the case.

Two things make this worth spelling out. A pump that is running does not prove that coolant is moving — a closed valve will let the pump spin happily while the boards sit thermally starved. And the temperature sensors that raise the alarm are on the hashboard, not on the controller, so a temperature fault is not something the control board caused or can be cured of by replacing it. We check the coolant path before we touch the controller, and we would rather find a closed valve than sell you a board you did not need.

What follows here is only what is different about the liquid-cooled variant.

Which Hydro miners take a C59 or C89

Boards of this type have been supplied for the S19 Hydro, T19 Hydro, S19 Pro Hydro, S19 Pro+ Hydro, S19 XP Hydro, S19e XP Hydro, S19 XP+ Hydro, S21 Hydro, S21+ Hydro, S21 XP Hydro, S21e Hydro, S21e XP Hydro and S23 Hydro.

The S9 Hydro is the exception and does not belong on this list. That machine came from an earlier generation and takes a Ctrl_C92 board, which is a different part in a different format.

And liquid cooling does not guarantee a Xilinx board. Three units in the range break the pattern, and we would rather you heard it here than found out after shipping. The S21+ Hydro exists with both a Xilinx and a CVITEK controller. The S21e Hydro has appeared with an Amlogic board in later production. The S19 XP Hydro U3 is CVITEK only — no Xilinx version of that one exists at all. If your machine is one of those three, the board in the chassis decides, not the model name, and we identify it on the bench before anything is fitted. Read the list as a guide rather than a guarantee about your unit. Bitmain never published a model-to-board list, so what is above is assembled from the people who actually supply these boards, and they do not agree with each other at every edge. The label on the machine narrows it down; the board itself settles it. If you are not sure, photograph the board and the port edge and send the pictures with your enquiry.

C59 and C89 — what actually differs

They are two revisions of one board rather than two different parts. C89 is the later of the two: it carries combined firmware covering the whole Hydro range, which is why it is what ships by default when either code is ordered. The narrower C59 listings you will find are limited to the 19-series machines. If your unit came with a C59, a C89 replaces it; the reverse is not something to assume.

Why replacement, not repair

The reason is money, and on a Hydro machine it is not a close call. A replacement board is a small fraction of what the miner is worth: liquid-cooled units run into the thousands, and the controller is two orders of magnitude below that. Component-level work on a dead board means bench hours and BGA rework, and it ends with a reworked joint rather than a board that already works.

This is where the arithmetic differs from the air-cooled side of the family. On an older S17 or S19 the cost of a control board has crept close enough to the price of a whole working second-hand miner that it is a fair question, and we say so on that page. On Hydro there is no such tension — the machine is worth keeping alive, and the honest recommendation is the straightforward one.

What we will still tell you: some faults are localised enough to be worth soldering rather than replacing, a cracked Ethernet jack or a fatigued header among them. That is a reason to diagnose the board before fitting anything, not a service we build around, because a re-flowed joint can crack again within days of going back under load.

Which boards, and what to check before ordering

We cover any Hydro model and any revision on this platform. There is no supported-models gate here and nothing to check against a list before you contact us.

Matching only becomes your problem if you are buying a bare board and fitting it yourself. Then the format is what catches people out: a Hydro board and an air-cooled board are not interchangeable in either direction, whatever the miner model suggests, and ordering by model name alone is how a board arrives that will not physically seat. If we are doing the replacement, matching the board to your machine is our job.

What happens after intake

  • Intake and incoming inspection. We record the condition as received, the board code, the connector layout and any visible damage, along with what the miner was doing when it stopped
  • The coolant path first. Flow, valve position and water temperature are checked before the controller is suspected, because a thermal fault will imitate a dead board
  • Diagnosis. We establish whether the control board is the fault rather than assuming it, separating it from the power supply and the hashboards, and following the start-up sequence where the machine does not come up at all
  • Fitting and configuration. The correct board goes in and is brought up on the right configuration for the machine — boards do not arrive configured for your unit. If what your miner actually needs is software rather than hardware, that is covered in our Antminer firmware section
  • Validation under load. The miner runs under real mining load with the loop connected, and we check for all hashboards present and a stable hashrate before it ships back

Before you ship, two things we would rather you heard from us

Your old board is disposed of. Removed boards are not kept in storage. If you want yours back, say so before the work starts — once it is gone we cannot retrieve it.

Expect the hashboards to need attention too. In the units that reach us, a control board fault rarely arrives on its own, and on a liquid-cooled machine the same event that took out the controller has often been through the rest of the chassis. That is the honest reason turnaround stays at 4-5 business days instead of being quoted as a same-day swap: one intake, one diagnosis, one shipment.
